Greek’s profiled in 2009 Canadian Rich List

Michael Lazarides 11th in Canadian Rich List

Canadian Business valued Mike Lazarides at $2.9 bil, moving up three places to eleventh from last years list. Despite being a university dropout himself, the co-founder and co-CEO of Research In Motion obviously sees value in post-secondary education. He and his wife, Ophelia, gave $25 million to the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing earlier this year, increasing their total donation to the facility to $101 million.

The Thomson family, which controls the Thomson Reuters media group, topped the list of Canada’s richest people for 2009, according to Canadian business magazine.

The overall number of Canadian billionaires this year crept up to 55 from 53 last year, with the total net worth of the richest 100 citizens coming in at $172.7 billion, making 2009 the second highest in the 11-year history of the survey.

The Thomson family’s wealth rose 19% from last year to about $21.9 billion. While the fastest climber in the rich-list ranking was Ivanhoe Mines executive Robert Friedland, who jumped 61 spots in the list to number 32 in the rankings.
